Not sure why this isn’t part of MacOS by default, but you can install wget by following the instructions here.

Agreed — wget definitely should be part of the default kit, at least for users who have Xcode installed.
To add another perspective, my preferred way to install wget is to install it through macports, since it makes version management (and rebuilding all those custom-installed applications from source after the 64-bit Snow Leopard upgrade!) much easier: http://www.macports.org/
